Blue Ribbon Oatmeal Walnut Bread

Ingredients
2 2/3 cups flour (up to 3)
2 packages yeast
2 teaspoons salt
1 1/2 cups water
1/3 cup molasses
4 teaspoons shortening
2/3 cup rolled oats
1 1/3 cups whole wheat flour
1 whole egg
1 cup walnuts -- chopped
1 tablespoon water
2 tablespoons rolled oats

Instructions
Combine 2 cups flour, yeast, and salt; mix well. In saucepan, heat water, molasses, shortening, and rolled oats until warm. Add to flour. Blend 3 minutes. Stir in walnuts and wheat flour. Add remaining flour to form soft dough. Knead 5 to 8 minutes. Cover. Let rise 30 minutes. Divide dough in 2. Shape each into round loaf. Let rise 40 minutes. Slash top. Brush with egg. Sprinkle with oats if desired. Bake at 375º for 30 to 35 minutes.
